Scott
didn’t sleep most of the night so I tried to be quiet so he could
sleep, the only problem with this was that we didn’t get on the road
until 10:20AM. Mom and Dad helped us get the camper turned around and we
were on our way. After about two and half hours on hilly and bumpy 502
we made it to the border. The officer only asked us four questions and
sent us on our way. After filling up the truck with gas in International
Falls we were on our way again. We made decent time and were in
Hermantown around 4:30PM. We stopped at Gander Mountain (probably last
year for that tradition because they are going out of business) and then
had a nice dinner at Outback Steak house. It was nice to get out of the
car for awhile.
We drove a couple more hours looking for a
campground to stay at. It was difficult because cell service isn’t the
greatest in northern Wisconsin along Route 53. Finally around 7:30PM I
found a place that had an opening. We ended our day at a campground Buck 'N Beam's. It was really strange. I felt like I was in the twilight
zone. We picked a great site that we could just pull through and not
even unhook the truck. I went in to reserve site 8 and found myself in a
bar. I stood there for a couple of minutes and didn’t see anyone
working so I finally kind of asked no one in particular how to reserve a
site. Some guy after giving me a hard time (pretty sure he was drunk)
told me the bartender was making someone a burger. I talked to him about
fishing (or lack of) in Canada while I waited for her. She finally came
buy and gave me the paperwork. $32 later I was finally back out at the
truck with Scott. We pulled in and did a minimum setup, and took a
little walk to stretch and check out the campgrounds. It appeared to be
very small - only the 8 sites. Scott LOVED the bathrooms/showers. He
kept saying they were the cleanest bathrooms he had ever seen. There was
only one stall with toilet, sink, and shower for each gender. Luckily
there didn’t appear to be anyone else on the campsite. There were seven
other campers and all but one had a vehicle parked by it all from other
states (except two Wisconsin plates). I saw a lady from the bar walking a
dog around 9pm but never saw another person (besides in the bar). Now
you might assume that they were all at the bar BUT we had talked to at
least 5-6 of them and none of them were staying on the campground. AND
there were only about 8-10 people at the bar.
On our way back
from the bathrooms, the bartender was out smoking a cigarette so I
introduced her to Scott and she told us a little about the owners and
the campground. She said the owners were wonderful and that the man was
an ordained minister and often held weddings there. She didn’t know the
denomination. Then she randomly gives me a hug.
We went back to
the camper and watched some TV, then we went to the restrooms again. On
the way there, we saw a truck and flatbed trailer loaded with some big
boxes. This wouldn’t seem too out of place except that there was a guy
in the dark with a flashlight under the truck. He jumped up and said
something about fixing that muffler some day. We kind of acknowledged
and started to move on when he hollered out to us… asking us if we
wanted to buy a watermelon for $4. We said no thanks. I was trying to
figure out whether to run or laugh hysterically. Scott didn’t think it
was weird or funny. It’s moments like this that I really miss having
Hannah with me!!
